Dive into the evolution of EarthQuaker Devices ⬇️
Jamie Stillman’s adventure began around 2004-2005, during his time as a tour manager. What started as a hobby of making pedals for himself and friends soon turned into an enterprise with significant growth. Jamie’s first pedals, sold on eBay and the now-defunct Harmony Central forum, were basic but unique in design.
Initially, Jamie didn’t take pedal-making seriously. But a prolonged break from touring provided the opportunity to focus more on what would become EarthQuaker Devices. His background as a graphic designer helped him brand the company, and by late 2006 to early 2007, EarthQuaker Devices began gaining traction.
With a growing customer base, EarthQuaker Devices quickly evolved. "I started getting orders pretty regularly and pretty quickly," Jamie recalls, noting the significance of his first U.S. dealer and a Japanese distributor. Jamie spent the initial years building pedals in his basement with his wife, Julie, who would help after her bank job.
By 2010, Jamie hired his first employee, and by 2012, nine people were working in his basement. It was clear that EarthQuaker Devices needed a bigger space. Julie took over managing the business, moving it out of the basement and into two big buildings and a studio in downtown Akron. Fast forward 20 years, and the company is thriving in a large, professional setup.
Jamie is no stranger to innovation. Reflecting on the company’s growth, he shared about moving from hand-etching circuit boards to using professional manufacturers. Advancements such as pick-and-place lines and wave solder lines have automated much of the assembly process, significantly improving efficiency and quality. Jamie emphasizes the importance of maintaining a DIY spirit, even as the company scales up.
As we wrapped up our conversation with Jamie Stillman, it became clear that EarthQuaker Devices thrives on a harmonious blend of past and present. Jamie’s dedication to organic growth and innovation ensures that the company stays true to its roots while continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in pedal design. Whether you’re a budding musician or a seasoned professional, EarthQuaker Devices offers a unique blend of quality, creativity, and reliability.
With Jamie at the helm, it’s exciting to think about what the next 20 years will bring for EarthQuaker Devices. Here’s to the continued journey of innovation, musical exploration, and keeping the DIY spirit alive!
